2012 CLS 63 AMG

Confusingly, the previous version of the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG actually had a 6.2 litre V8 engine, not a 6.3 as its name implied. And the 2012 model, just unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, adds to the muddle by having a 5.5 litre capacity.

However, despite its smaller size, the new engine comes equipped with twin turbos which help it to generate 518 bhp (386 kW / 525 PS) and a massive 699 Nm (516 lb/ft) of torque. That’s an increase of 11 bhp (8 kW / 11 PS) and 69 Nm (51 lb/ft) over its predecessor, meaning the 2012 CLS 63 AMG completes the 0-60 mph (96 km/h) sprint in just 4.4 seconds, before running onto an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

If that’s not enough, the optional AMG Performance Package can be specified. This raises turbo boost pressure from 1.0 bar (14.5 psi) to 1.3 bar (18.8 psi), increasing power to 550 bhp (410 kW / 557 PS) and torque to a tyre-shredding 799 Nm (590 lb/ft).

The 0-60 mph time falls slightly to 4.3 seconds, and the limiter gets recalibrated to allow a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h), but those figures alone probably don’t convey the full impact of the upgrade. The Performance Package also includes a carbon fibre engine cover and rear spoiler, red brake calipers, sports suspension and an Alcantara trimmed steering wheel.

Keeping the car on the road is an AMG Adaptive Suspension system which features steel springs at the front and air suspension at the rear, together with automatic ride-height control and electronically variable damping. The driver can switch between ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’ suspension settings at the touch of a button.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG is due to go on sale in the summer of 2011. Prices have yet to be announced.
